The Ottawa Senators suffered a tough loss to start their off-season Saturday night.

But the Senators believe theyll be just fine, even though they wont have a chance at selecting Swedish sensation Rasmus Dahlin, who is the top-ranked prospect.

After finishing 30th overall during the regular season, it didnt take long for the NHL to spoil the party when deputy commissioner Bill Daly revealed Ottawa will have the No. 4 selection in the draft being held June 22-23 at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas.

Senators general manager Pierre Dorion was on hand for the pick along with owner Eugene Melnyk and assistant general manager Randy Lee. After finishing second-last, the Senators had 13.5% odds of winning the lottery while 31st-ranked Sabres were at 18.5%.

Ottawa fell back because the Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes both moved up to push the Senators out of the top three.

Not a lot went right for the Senators this season and there was no shortage of excitement about the lottery before it took place.

Im disappointed we didnt get No. 1, but Im excited that we got No. 4 if you look at what happened last year when three teams went into the top three and the No. 1 team (fell) to No. 4, Dorion said in an interview Saturday night at the CBC studios.

For us, the product of our bad season is that we know that were going to get a really good player at No. 4. That were really excited about and were really excited about that selection when its going to come up.

Though Dorion has the option to send the pick to the Colorado Avalanche as part of the Matt Duchene deal, Dorion stated for the first time publicly Saturday night thats not going to be the case.

Were going to keep the pick. Theres no denying that we think that player were going to take at No. 4 is someone thats going to be able to help us maybe as soon as next year, Dorion said.

That means Ottawas first-round pick in 2019 will go to the Avalanche but thats the least of Dorions concerns.
